March 30th, Chris Kuehl reported in Business Intelligence Brief:

Steel Prices Set to Double as New Iron Ore Pricing System is Established

The three major iron ore companies flexed their muscles collectively and a 40 year old system vanished. The old system of setting iron

ore prices was based on an annual contract that was set when a major steelmaker agreed to a price. At that point all the other steel makers

followed suit and the price was set for the year. Now that system is in tatters. The pricing will be quarterly and based on spot market trends.

The initial contract will take the price of iron ore to between $90 and $100 a ton in contrast to the $60 a ton it sold for last year. The result

is a doubling of steel prices in the immediate future and no guarantee at all that they will not go up in the next quarter. The agreement was

signed between some Japanese and Chinese steelmakers and the Europeans will follow shortly.

Analysis: The impact will be felt very quickly. The big steel makers will raise their prices soon and that means that every industry that

uses steel is going to see their costs double – at least. The steel makers are very likely to price in anticipation of future hikes and that

could mean their prices more than double in the weeks to come. Not good news for automakers, machine makers and for elements of

the construction business.
