Our thanks go out to Harry for pointing out that the heat exchanger parts shown in the Vancouver Iron Works photo in the latest Forming Ideas newsletter are Scotch Marine Boilers.
They were likely used in Merchant Marine vessels being built in local shipyards. Scotch Marine Boilers are a type of boiler designed to develop steam power. Although first used to power a locomotive in 1830, they were widely used to power ships from the mid 1800’s through to the mid 1900’s. Larger ships required multiple boilers. In fact, the Titanic had 29 of them.
